Benjamin Franklin (1706 – 1790) was an American polymath: a leading writer, scientist, inventor, statesman, diplomat, printer, publisher and political philosopher. Among the most influential intellectuals of his time, Franklin was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States; a drafter and signer of the Declaration of Independence; and the first postmaster general. In 1743, Benjamin Franklin founded the American Philosophical Society, the nation’s first learned society. Franklin proposed that “ingenious Men residing in the several colonies” be elected as Members of the Society. Members were to pursue “all philosophical Experiments that let Light into the Nature of Things, tend to increase the Power of Man over Matter, and multiply the Conveniencies or Pleasures of Life.” No. I (Page 1): Conjectures concerning the formation of the Earth, &c in a Letter from Dr. B. Franklin, to the Abbé Soulavie. No. III (Page 8): Description of the process to be observed in making large sheets of paper in the Chinese manner, with one smooth surface. No. IV (Page 10): Queries and Conjectures relative to Magnetism, and the Theory of the Earth, in a Letter from Franklin to Bodoin. Francis Hopkinson (1737 – 1791) was an American Founding Father, lawyer, jurist, author, and composer. He designed Continental paper money and two early versions of flags, one for the United States and one for the United States Navy. He was a signer of the Declaration of Independence in July 1776 as a delegate from New Jersey. No. XV (Page 122): An Account of the effects of a stroke of Lightning on a House furnished with two Conductors. No. XXX (Page 239): Description of a Machine for measuring a ship's way.
