Description: A complete run of the newspaper Gazette de Leyde for the year 1790 The bibliographer Joseph Sabin states, “this valuable journal is of the highest importance for the history of America. Each number is divided into two parts, each of four pages, the second of them bearing the title «Supplement aux Nouvelles’ is very often entirely filled by the news from America. The editor of this Gazette, Mr. Luzac, was a very learned man, of high, liberal principles, who fostered and encouraged to his utmost the contest of American United States against England. He was in correspondence with the heads of the American Revolution, and especially with J. Adams. These relations enabled him to publish many of the most important documents, as he himself says, ‘le premier en Europe’.” (Sabin 26810) In the same year of the present run Thomas Jefferson opinion on the Gazette de Leyde was of the highest consideration as explained by the National Archives in an editorial note titled “Jefferson’s Alliance in 1790 with Fenno’s Gazette of the United States”. For the complete editorial see online: http://founders.archives.gov/documents/Jefferson/01-16-02-0138-0001) The 1790 issues and supplements include historically significant reports related to the United States, such as the Residency Act creating the capital and federal district of Washington in Virginia (or somewhere in the center of the United States), news on North Carolina, Rhode Island approval of the United States Constitution, comprehensive details regarding the Nootka Crisis on Vancouver Island and John Meares, accounts on George Washington, John Adams, Alexander Hamilton, among others.
