Description: A surprisingly well preserved 1785 copy of The Citizen Of The World: Or, Letters From A Chinese Philosopher, Residing In London, To His Friends In The East. Vol 2 by Oliver Goldsmith. Oliver Goldsmith's work, "Citizen of the World," consists of a series of letters supposedly penned by Lien Chi, a Chinese philosopher, and addressed to friends in China. Employing the theme of an Eastern traveler unfamiliar with European morals and customs, akin to Montesquieu's 1721 Persian Letters, Goldsmith skillfully provides insightful commentary on the idiosyncrasies of British social life and manners, a perspective he might not have been able to offer through conventional means. This particular copy (vol. 2 only) is in very good condition for age. Light signs of wear to covers and spine, good binding, good, clean pages. Some yellowing and foxing to pages as expected. Superb patina to the leather covers.
