1778 Eloge de Michel de L’Hospital, Chancelier de France

Description: Michel de l’Hopital was a French statesman who was influential in helping Catherine de’ Medici with her ambitions for her children. As chancellor of France, he was considered a moderate and worked to prevent the affects of the Inquisition from being felt too strongly by the Protestants. He eventually retired to his estate in Vignay. Jacques Antoine Hippolyte, Comte de Guibert was a French general and military writer who wrote an influential work on military tactics, as well as several memoirs of influential military men. This is a slender volume in very good condition from the library at Haverford College with a bookplate in the front and small sticker at the rear. These are the only “library marks“ within. There is a passage, in French, on the first spare which, loosely translated describes some of the content. There are occasional pencil marks at the margins, marking out certain passages and pencil on the front spare.
