DATE PRINTED: 1777 (dated on print) SIZE: The printed area including titles is approximately 22.5 x 18 cm (9 x 7 inches) plus margins with a blank back (medium). ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Drawn by Paul Sandby and engraved by Richard Godfrey. Paul Sandby RA (1731 – 9 November 1809) was an English map-maker turned landscape painter in watercolours, who, along with his older brother Thomas, became one of the founding members of the Royal Academy in 1768. PROVENANCE: This print was published in 'The Antiquarian repertory: a miscellaneous assemblage of topography, history, biography, customs, and manners. Intended to illustrate and preserve several valuable remains of old times. Chiefly compiled by, or under the direction of Francis Grose, Thomas Astle and other eminent antiquaries'. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Woodstock is a market town and civil parish 8 miles (13 km) north-west of Oxford in Oxfordshire, England. Edward, elder son of King Edward III and heir apparent, was born in Woodstock Manor on 15 June 1330. In his lifetime he was commonly called Edward of Woodstock, but is known today as the Black Prince.
