His parents were of humble station, and he received a very elementary education but, being clever with his pencil, he was taken into service by Thomas Pennant about 1769. Pennant helped him to study drawing and engraving, and Griffiths became his constant companion on his tours and excursions, making the drawings and engravings for Pennant's numerous works. Griffiths became proficient both as a draughtsman and as an engraver. PROVENANCE: Published in 'A Tour in Scotland, Part II, 1776', by Thomas Pennant, published in 2 volumes. Thomas Pennant (14 June OS 1726 – 16 December 1798) was a Welsh naturalist, traveller, writer and antiquarian. He was born and lived his whole life at his family estate, Downing Hall near Whitford, Flintshire in Wales. Pennant set a new standard in travel literature: Samuel Johnson (whose own travelogue it provoked) said of him, "He's the best traveller I ever read; he observes more things than anyone else does".
