1776 2 Vol, A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy by Mr. Yorick LEATHER

Description: First published in 1768, this is a "New Edition" of Mr. Yorick's (aka Laurence Sterne) iconic, A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy. FULL LEATHER BINDING IN GOOD CONDITION. I can't say for certain this is original binding - judge that for yourself. Five raised leather bands, rubbed red block titling on the spine. Darkened page tops. The board attachment to the spine is reinforced front and back in both books with the use of white binding tape in the crack between the front board and first free endpaper - see example which also shows the bookplate and the white tape. The bookplate is in both books. The boards may have been fully detached and this tape and possibly some adhesive now keeps the boards in place (see listing photo close-up of where the front board meets the spine in one of the books). The bookplate is that of Frederick Leveson Gower. I am unable to find this bookplate online or identify the owner. Wikipedia has this entry for "Frederick Leveson-Gower": "Hon. Edward Frederick Leveson-Gower DL, JP (3 May 1819 – 30 May 1907), commonly known as Freddy Leveson, was a British barrister, Liberal politician, and aristocrat from the Leveson-Gower family." There are no illustrations in this published version. The books measure 6.2" by 4.0". 203 clean and solidly bound pages in Volume 1, ending with an advertisement "Letters of the Late Rev. Laurence Sterne", 208 clean and solidly bound pages in Volume 2. Brief synopsis of this iconic story: "An English priest named Yorick, deciding to travel to France, packs and sails for Calais. In Calais, a Franciscan monk begs Yorick for alms. Yorick cruelly rebuffs him. After the monk leaves, Yorick regrets his cruelty and resolves to let his trip teach him to be a better person." SLL
