Description: View title: No. 26. Place et Quai du Louvre Series title: Vue Instantanée de Paris ("Snapshot of Paris.") Description: This view looks North along the rue Royale toward the church of the Madeleine. It was taken from an upper story of a building on the east side of rue Royale, probably opposite what is now Maxim's Museum of Art Nouveau. On the left side, just before where the facades are set back and the trees begin, is the intersection of rue Royale with rue Faubourg St, Honoré on the left and rue St. Honoré on the right. The neighborhood is currently home to a number of Paris's (and the world's) major fashion labels. Photographer: Hippolyte Jouvin - Photographie H. J. à Paris Hippolyte Jouvin was a French photographer born in Clinchamp on December 7, 1825. His younger brother Leon preceded him into the photography business, sometime in the late 1850's. The two brothers lived and worked separately in Paris. Hippolyte was active as a photographer from about 1860 to at least the early 1870s. He died in Paris in 1889. Hippolyte Jouvin is known mainly as a stereographer. (I have also seen images in carte de visite format, but they were cropped images from one half of a stereo pair.) His work includes two sets of views of Paris, views of France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, London, the Louvre Museum, and Churches of Paris; "Groupes et Sujets," which are mainly genre views, but also include arts and crafts, depicting people at various occupations; "Enfantillages," a rather bizarre series featuring figures of oversized babies engaged in adult activities; and "Ruines de Paris (1871) showing the destruction from the Franco-Prussian War and the suppression of the Commune. This is one of a dozen views by Jouvin I am currently offering for sale. Please visit my store to see the others.
