With an engraved vignette to the title, numerous engraved vignettes to the text and 29 large folding plates (including Tabula Totius Orbis Terrarium by Edmund Halley). [10], 743 pages, [1] leaves Lugduni, Luchtmans. 1744. Original half calf with marbled boards. Gilt lettering. Reference: DSB IX, 596. Dutch natural philosopher and experimenter Petrus van Musschenbroek (1692–1761) is commonly thought of as one of the first ‘Newtonians’ on the Continent. ‘Tabula Totius Orbis Terrarum Exhibens Declinationes Magneticas, prout Observatae sunt 1744.’ Edmund Halley's (discoverer of Halley's Comet) important chart of the world, showing the variations of the compass and winds. With Australia named 'Hollandia Nova', and with an incomplete coast line; New Zealand is not shown. North America with "Nova Brittania', Virginia, Carolina, Florida, and California as an island. A few old library stamps (17th Century, not to plates; verso of title). A few leaves a little browned. Ink stain to one board. Stamp to upper edge. A very good example and exceedingly rare with the magnetic world map.
