It was intended to replace the RAF’s outdated de Havilland Chipmunks. The design, known as the B.125 Bulldog, featured a more powerful 200-hp engine driving a constant-speed propeller, along with strengthened wings and fuselage, allowing for full aerobatics. However, before a prototype could be delivered for evaluation, severe financial problems led to the company’s liquidation. In May 1970, Scottish Aviation Limited (SAL) acquired the development and manufacturing rights and began production of the Bulldog T1 trainer the following year. The first customer was Sweden, which designated the aircraft as the SK 61. A total of 220 Bulldog T1 Military Trainers were produced, with the Royal Air Force (RAF) being the largest purchaser. In 1972, the RAF ordered 130 Bulldogs to be used as “flight-aptitude” trainers for cadets in University Air Squadrons (UAS). The Bulldog continued in this role until 2000, when it was gradually replaced with Grob Tutor T1 trainers.
