Contemporary panelled calf, calf letteringpiece, recently recornered and rebacked preserving the majority of the original backstrip. Heavily rubbed. Leaves browned and spotted, small hole to leaf C2 with some loss of text and sense, loss to upper corner of leaf Fff2, short marginal tear to leaf Ggg2, very occasional early manuscript annotations. The sole edition of the first published work of antiquary and historian Thomas Madox (16661727); a classified collection of English charters and feudal documents from 1066 to 1547, principally selected from the archives of the court of augmentation. The work was immediately lauded by Madox's contemporaries. The dissertation that prefaces the charters is widely regarded as the first full discussion of the palaeography of English legal instruments. The work is considered a seminal effort in the development of social history.
