Koto Soshu Tsunahiro Katana, Jo Saku, circa 1550’s Paper / certificate : NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon, with Koshirae An ubu Koto katana by the Muromachi era vanguard of the Soshu tradition. This is a work by the 2nd generation Soshu Tsunahiro who was active in the mid-1500’s. The Tsunahiro lineage was well-known for carrying on the Soshu tradition and manufacturing swords with exuberant and often chaotic hamon including the infamous hitatsura hamon that places areas of tempered steel all over the exterior of the blade. The blade features a classic mid-Muromachi period sugata, with the blade intended to be worn edge up as an uchigatana. There are remnants of horimono carvings of kanji’s on both sides. The nakago is ubu and signed Soshu ju Tsunahiro. The jigane is a loud itame hada that at times becomes a burl mokume, and also mixes with a running masame into the hamon. The hamon is a vibrant and active Soshu-style gunome midare-ba, that is interspersed with hataraki including prevalent sunagashi, yubashiri, and tobiyaki. The hamon finishes in a hakikake boshi with a swept effect. Along with high quality Edo period handachi style koshirae, featuring an outstanding signed shakudo habaki with a basket weaved design.
