It was struck and dated 1662 during the 1648-1670 reign of King Frideric III of Denmark. For centuries, Norway and Denmark shared a common monarch. This union began informally in the late 14th century when Margaret I, Queen of Denmark, inherited the Norwegian throne. The “Kalmar Union”, which united Denmark, Norway, and Sweden solidified this relationship. While Sweden eventually broke away, the bond between Denmark and Norway endured. By the 17th century, the two nations were tightly integrated, sharing a common foreign policy and economy. However, this union was often characterized by Danish dominance, which sowed the seeds of Norwegian discontent. Britain attacked Denmark during the “Napoleonic Wars” to eliminate the threat of the Danish fleet falling into the hands of Napoleon and that forced Denmark to become his ally. When he fell, the resulting “Treaty of Kiel” in 1814 punished Denmark and dissolved the Danish-Norwegian union, making Norway independent. Weight: 1.04 Grams, 18 Millimeters, .281 Silver. Norwegian coins this early are not common. This one is fully original, and has never suffered a cleaning, making it scarcer yet.
