Description: De Veteri Ritu Nuptiarum & jure Connuborium, Barnabe Brisson, Francois and Antoine Hotman, Francisco Barbaro, Lugundi Batavorum, Apud Franciscum Hackium, 1641, 566 pp, 24pp, 5 x 3”, engraved title plate, vellum, 32mo. In good condition. Lipped vellum typically tanned, slight soiling to surface. Two small worm hole to front board top left corner. Manuscript spine marked two hands. Older hand faded. Bookplate of the 7th Earl of Buckinghamshire, Sidney Hobart-Hampden-Mercer-Henderson dated 1906 with Coat of Arms. Text block in very good condition with little to no foxing, minimal toning. Free of marginalia. Binding remains tight and intact. A nice copy. Please see photos. Scarce. The first work is on Roman wedding customs and matrimonial law. Barbaro’s treatise was written to Lorenzo di Medici on the occasion of his marriage in 1416. It is by no means a feminist work, suggesting submissive, silent, and loving support for one's husband.
