The first edition of this work, being the first edition published in a single volume with a continuous pagination. Two editions were published in this year, the first edition was published in two parts with different pagination, and this edition. In a vellum binding. This work is a fascinating look at the churches and antiquities of the city of Rome. Felini describes the works of antiquity that were being carried out and built in the contemporary period, and looks at the artists who were working at the time and throughout history in Rome, specifically those who had worked on churches. Felini also meticulously discusses an overview of the art works by these artists. Rome was a major centre during the Renaissance, and was very affected by the movement, such as the art and architecture that came about during this era, including the Piazza del Campidoglio by Michelangelo. The work offers a great insight into what was happening in the city during this defining era of the city's history. The work was a turning point in the series of Rome guides, with the author attempting to meet the demands of the public that the previous guides lacked, merging together the categories of the ancient, the Christian, and the modern capital, whereas previous guides had mostly focussed on one subject. Written by Pietro Martire Felini, a distinguished nobleman born in Cremona who was well educated and studied languages, archeology, and music. He spent a month as a novice at her hermitage of Monte Senario, near Florence, though he left as he decided that solitude wasn't for him. It's believed that he was sent to Rome to teach singing. With a list to the rear noting the Dukes of Vencia, Vicars of Ferrara, Roman Imperator, the Kings of Spain and France, and more. Profusely illustrated with in-text woodcuts to many pages. Written in Spanish. Collated, complete. This octavo has the signatures from +8, A-Z8, AA-FF8, a front endpaper, and a rear endpaper. The preliminaries use the signature '+'. A vellum bound copy of Pietro Martire Felini's guide to Rome, profusely illustrated throughout. CONDITION In a contemporary full vellum binding.
