Description: THE FABLE OF THE SWAN AND THE STORK (from Aesop) Original copper plate engraving 1608 by AEGIDIUS SADELER (Flemish School, 1560-1629) after a design by Marcus Gheeraerts. An illustration (plate 3 in top left corner) from the edition of Aesop's Fables published by Sadeler himself in Prague in 1608. Unsigned, but the attribution is cast-iron solid (see my references below) The Fable relates how a stork meets a dying swan and asks why it can sing so beautifully near the end of its life. The swan replies that it is entering a state where it would no longer be afraid of snares, guns or hunger - and was therefore joyful. The moral of the story is that death is seen not as an end point, but rather as a new beginning. CONDITION/TECHNICAL: Please read carefully and zoom the photos. Look at the top of the print and you will see that it has been cut horizontally just above the stork's head. This has clearly been professionally repaired and the entire print expertly laid down on a support sheet, probably 20th century. It's a very good restoration. Printed on very thin laid paper, trimmed to thread margins to the image border line. (My pricing takes condition into account) Size: Small - 8.5 x 12.5 centimetres.
