Description: Offered is an Elizabethan Indenture dated 19th September 1599. I am not particularly adept at reading the script but the Right Honourable George Earle of Cumberland is named in the second line. Presumably he was the owner of the land in question. The reverse of the document refers to the agreement being between Rd Smith to Rd Dawson and states "Conveyance of Sandbods"? the last word uncertain. George Earl of Cumberland was George Clifford, the 3rd Earl, 13th Baron de Clifford, 13th Lord of Skipton (these titles also recorded on the document) who lived in Brougham Castle on the outskirts of Penrith. His ancestral home now a ruin managed by English Heritage. He was a naval commander and a courtier of Queen Elizabeth. Apparently he was renowned at court for his jousting skill. This is a large document with several folds and thinning in some of these. There is a wax seal attached at the bottom but the seal is barely legible.Presumably this is of historic importance and certainly worthy of further study. Measures approximately 570mm x 535mm. I am happy to ship worldwide.
