Description: Rare post incunablefolio, vellum bound and printed in Latin. Appears to be a commentary on Justinian's Institutiones, a portion of Roman Law from the Corpus Juris Civilis. See pics for titling. The aesthetic of this book is fantastic; aged, smokey looking rippled vellum with hand tied binding makes for an ancient look, complete with a hand drawn title to the spine. An added surprise is included- the binding reinforcement used in its making, include a large and much older manuscript, likely written in the 14th or early 15th century, as shown. This leaf appears complete and has illuminated blue and red letters with annotations and more. Vellum binding shows some damage with light edgewear and some staining, the spine with clear manuscript titling. Pages have some minor staining and a few tears on the endpapers, no major damage otherwise. The book has another fantastic element, multiple inscriptions in front and rear, one mentioning Barcelona, as well as a beautiful handwritten TOC written on the ffep, as shown. Typecast, content and format are certainly reminiscent of the first half of the 16th century, with historiated initials, Gothic font and gorgeous formatting. Massive folio, measures around 16.5" 12" x 3.25". Appears to be the only copy around. A real find with multiple levels of history all packed into one book. Good lu
