Description: I’m offering 20-plus fresh seeds of the spectacular Agave maculata (previous name: Manfreda Maculosa), also known as Texas Tuberose or Spice Lily. What a plant! It is beautiful, fragrant, hardy, drought-tolerant, and easy to grow. But more, it is the larval food plant for one of the rarest butterflies in the United States, the Manfreda Giant-Skipper.Renowned for its striking foliage and blossoms, Spice Lily originates from sandy scrublands in Southern Texas and adjacent regions of northern Mexico (Coahuila, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas). Historically, its rhizomes were utilized by Indigenous North American peoples for soap and shampoo production.Spice Lily is a robust “succulent-like” perennial. Forming a rosette of narrow, soft, sword-shaped soft-green leaves, up to a foot long, adorned with prominent reddish-purple to dark brown spots. It produces tall spikes in the summer (up to five feet), bearing fragrant two-inch cream-colored flowers that age to a rose-pink hue. It thrives in well-drained soil and is ideal for planting in light shade with regular to minimal irrigation. This plant does best when allowed to dry out between waterings. It can endure arid conditions by shedding its leaves during drought. It can be grown in a spacious container large enough to accommodate its extensive root system. It is said to be cold-tolerant down to 18 F, but wild ones here have survived during freezes down to 14 F. These plants can also be grown in containers. I suggest using a pot that is at least 12 inches deep. If you know of the recent popularity of MANGAVE PLANTS, they are crosses between Manfreda and Agave plants (thus MANGAVE). So you get one of the two parents of a Mangave! I collected these seeds from wild plants on our farm in South Texas on 8 July 2024. They will be at their highest fertility. I will send sprouting instructions with the packet of seeds. If you have questions, please get in touch with me. Robert Benson.
