Description: Description: This is a nice English translation and collection of commentaries on the entire 24 books of the Old Testament. It contains a lot of material for those studying Biblical Criticism as well. Gathered and formulated by a collection of educated scholars who specialized in the specific book that they worked on. There are two editions of this set. The first edition (Which this one is), was originally written between 1945 & 1952 with many impressions thereafter of the same edition, until around 1990. And the second edition which started around 1990 and was edited thereafter. Special note about editions of this set: This first edition also includes modern historical scholarship, including the work of Christian bible historians. The second edition does not. This is a very important distinction between the two sets. This set also presents a summary of traditional, rabbinic views of the Tanakh (Hebrew Bible.) The editor draws on many Jewish sources, such as: the Midrash literature, the Talmud, and the commentaries - medieval rabbinic Jewish Bible commentators. These include Abraham ibn Ezra, Rashi, Ramban, Radak, Sforno and Ralbag (Gersonides). Hard to find this first phenomenal edition in nice condition with the dust covers. The set up for sale is the first edition completely including all the dust covers. Condition: The dust covers are very nice and crisp except for a few with scuffs and some a bit worn or frayed at edges. A couple volumes have have some wrinkles to pages, not affecting function at all. One dust cover has a stain to inside, and one volume has small stamp on initial page, non-intrusive. A few volumes have a name. Half the volumes show traces of wear at some corners and/or cover edges. Other than mentioned there is no writing whatsoever anywhere in this set. No highlighting or defacement. The pages are clean and crisp, covers are very nice and the binding is excellent. Printed in The United Kingdom by Whitefriars Press Ltd. Tonbridge & London. N.I.I. As an aside, the second edition appeared in the 1990s, edited by Rabbi Abraham J. Rosenberg, who has also written for Judaica Press and Artscroll. Unfortunately, instead of updating the historical scholarship, it was removed entirely. The removed material was replaced by additional Midrash. The editor explains that this was necessary because it "diluted" the work. In fact, historical material was censored, as is unfortunately common for the most right-wing groups in Judaism. The current set above for sale does not have this defect. Smart-phone users, click top right menu of phone, select 'request desktop site'.
