The Big Swede is set in the upper midwest of Minnesota, the Dakota Territories, Fort Garry (Canada), and the Red River Valley from 1850 to 1863. The Big Swede is an impeccably researched novel that brings to vibrant life an area being settled for the first time by whites with all of the excitement, opportunities, danger and romance of a western frontier. The reader will meet the colorful metis from the Northern Red River (people half Indian and half French) whose ox carts transport the furs in great caravans to waiting steamboats on the Mississippi River at the hamlet of St. Paul, near Old Fort Snelling. Camped like gypsies, not far from his cabin in St. Anthony Falls, Olaf discovers a beautiful metis girl, Marianne LaMond, who has hurt her leg. Olaf dresses her wound. And in that brief encounter, meets the love of his life. He is to see her a year later on the buffalo hunt when they pledge faithfulness while Marianne fulfills her one year obligation to the church as a novice in a faraway Montreal convent. Sadly, this complicated arrangement extends from one year to many years. Hard work, hostile Indian attacks, blazing trails for stage and wagon service, and the ever present hardships seem to combine to prevent the lovers from reuniting.
