Description: Title: 112. Boulevard et Porte Saint-Martin The series:This auction is for a stereoview from the “(vues de Paris)” series, which presents images of Paris as it then was in the late 1850s and early 1860s. There are roughly two hundred numbered views in the series, including some with the same style of mount and label but lacking the (vues de Paris) title. The artist:There is nothing printed on any of these by an artist claiming authorship of these works. A small number from this series represent imperial residences, and a small number of those are clearly from the same negatives as views published by Florent Grau. Grau used as a marque the initials “G. A. F.”, which were his initials in reverse order. I bring this up to suggest that some, perhaps all, of the works in this series are by Grau. Feel free to contact me with evidence for or against this attribution. Many of these have a rubber-stamp on the reverse for A. Hautecoeur, but he was a print and photograph dealer, not a photographer. The History:This view looks north across the Boulevard Saint-Martin to the Porte (gate) of the same name. The boulevard runs from in front of the Porte to beyond the edge of the frame at the viewer’s right. Just out of the frame at the right the Boulevard takes the name Saint-Denis, and runs for about 200 meters to the Porte Saint-Denis, and thereafter becomes the Boulevard de Bonne Nouvelle. At one time, when Paris was still a walled city, this was its northern limit, and the Porte Saint-Martin was one of its gates. The street beyond is the rue du Faubourg Saint-Martin. In fact, Paris was still a walled city when this photograph was taken, but new walls had been built when Paris expanded to include the Faubourg Saint-Martin and a large number of other communities that had grown up outside its walls. The old walls had been torn down and replaced by a ring of boulevards.
