Written by John D. Billings, the renowned author of the Civil War classic, Hard Tack and Coffee, Billings served in the 10th Massachusetts Light Artillery Battery during the war and authored this extraordinary book. This excellent book is a chronological history of the battery during the Civil War, and it also includes a complete roster and roll of the company along with individual Civil War service information on each soldier. According to the Nevins-Robertson-Wiley bibliography, this book is considered to be "among the top dozen unit histories pertaining to the Civil War." His sources were about as good as it gets for the era, for he used his own wartime diary, about 300 letters, and a comrade's manuscript as the foundation for his work. The battery was mustered in 1862 and served in the Army of the Potomac from August 1862 through the end of the war and in addition to the unit's movements, Billings paints a worthy portrait of soldier life, the countryside they moved in, and of the various officers of the unit. The unit initially served with the defenses of Washington and on defenses in Maryland. It then moved to Maryland Heights and later to Frederick City and Frederick Junction and Williamsport before arriving near Antietam Bridge by July. It conducted operations in Loudoun Valley in July and near Warrenton. At Sulphur Springs, near Culpeper, at the Bristoe Campaign and near Fairfax Station and Catlett’s Station, at Warrenton Junction, Kelly’s Ford, Brandy Station and in the Mine Run Campaign the second half of 1863. If was at Brandy Station, Stevensburg, Ron the Rapidan Campaign, at the Battle of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Spotsylvania Court House, assaulted the Salient, at Harris Farm, at North Anna, on line of the Pamunky, at Totopotomoy, Cold Harbor and before Petersburg in 1864. It participated in the Siege of Petersburg, operations at Jerusalem Plank Road, demonstrated north of the James River, served at Deep Bottom, Strawberry Plains, Ream’s Station, in the trenches at Petersburg, at Boydton Plank Road, Hatcher’s Run, in Forts Stevenson, Blaisdell and Welch until the end of 1864. In 1865 it was in Forts Emery and Siebert, at Dabney’s Mills, Hatcher’s Run, Watkins’ House and participated in the Appomattox Campaign. It was present for the fall of Petersburg, the pursuit of Lee, the operations at Sailor’s Cree, crossed at High Bridge, and was present when Lee’s Army surrendered at Appomattox. It them marched to Washington, D.C., participated in the Grand Review and was mustered out in June of 1865. THIS BOOK IS IN NEAR FINE CONDITION This original, first edition, antique book is in excellent, overall condition. It comes protected in a clear, Mylar dust jacket (see photo #3). The book is handsomely bound in red, cloth covers with bright, gold lettering and the image of a cannon on the cover and a caisson on the spine. The book has lined, decorative highlights. The exterior is clean and bright. The spine a some fading, but the front and rear covers are bright and the images and lettering are sharp and bright. The exterior has no bumping, rubbing or discernible edge wear. The interior is clean and the pages are in excellent condition. The book has a stamped date and "James Library" stamp on the front endpage as shown, but no other such markings throughout. There is an impressed stamp on some of the illustrations pages, but the book is fine otherwise. The book has no other writing, smudging, foxing or pasteboards. It has no other library markings, pockets, residue, etc. The binding is solid throughout; the book has no looseness or lean and both hinges are fine. The book has an illustrated frontispiece of Major J. Henry Sleeper (the Unit’s commander) and contains twenty-five portraits, and twelve sketches of battle scenes, etc., taken from historic photographs and engravings. One of the plates is in color, illustrating the symbols/marks of all three divisions of the four Corps, plus the Artillery Brigade. The book is complete with a unit roster and a full index. The book has 12 (xii) pages of introductory material and 496 pages. This is an excellent condiiton, original, first edition book, protected in a clear, Mylar cover, by a noted author and Civil War veteran, on the 10th Massachusetts Battery.
