You are bidding on 10 ONYX ODYSSEY LENTEN ROSE SEEDS - Helleborus orientalis Onyx Odyssey.Often known as hellebores , Christmas rose , these elegant perennials bloom during the Lenten season in late winter and early spring, hence their name. They are particularly valued by gardeners for their winter and early spring flowering period; the plants are surprisingly frost-resistant and many are evergreen. The upright, maroon stems bearing double, nodding , very large 3” “blooms” are slate black through maroon to dark purple flowers from late winter into spring in hue and hold their color over an extended period of time (3 months or more!) .The down facing blooms have 15-20 petals each for a very full look. New growth on this cultivar is dark in color as well! Like all Hellebores, 'Onyx Odyssey' is a durable and reliable plant. Deer are no obstacle and neither are clay soil, nor drought. Blooms in winter thru the spring. These exhibit a strong resistance to deer, drought, and disease. With many varieties being hardy across four zones as well, this versatile perennial can even grace the gardens of the most northern of planters. The dried root is used, it contains the alkaloids nervine, pseudo-nervine and veratridine. It is best to harvest the root in the autumn. The plant is useful for reducing blood pressure in various conditions of hypertension. Other uses of : A decoction of the roots is used as a parasiticide against body lice, fleas etc. This use is somewhat dangerous, see the notes above on toxicity. Plants are suitable for ground cover when spaced about 45cm apart each way. Known hazards of : All parts of the plant are poisonous, this poison can possibly be absorbed through the skin.
