Description: 1654-1656 Shipwreck Nuestra Señora de las Maravillas 0.48ct Colombian Raw Emerald Description: 0.48ct Colombian Raw Emerald From The Nuestra Señora de las Maravillas Shipwreck Carat Weight: 0.48ct Serial #: CE0152 Certificate Of Authenticity: SeascapeArtifact Exhibits, Inc. (www.shipwreck.net) Nuestra Señora de las Maravillas, the Almiranta of the Spanish treasure fleet of 1654-1656, left Spain on a mission to return tons of coins and treasure from New World mints. After loading cargo in Panama and Cartagena (Colombia) the fleet waited in port in Havana while millions of pesos were being recovered from the South Seas Fleet's Capitana, which recently sank near Ecuador. Once fully loaded, the Maravillas and fleet began their return and quickly encountered strong winds, Pushed into shallow water north of Grand Bahama Island, the Maravillas collided with another ship in the fleet then sank after striking a reef. On January 4, 1656, the ship was lost at a depth of 50 feet with only 45 of the 650 passenger able to survive. During several recovery attempts, the Spanish were able to salvage about half of the treasure that included large quantities of gold, silver coins, jewelry, pearls and precious stones. However, much remained lost and would lay undisturbed on the sea floor for the next 300 years. Many efforts were made to locate the lost treasure during modern times. Then in 1972, the Maravillas was re-dicovered along with significant quantities of rare Spanish Colonial Coins, artifacts and Colombian Emeralds mined during the mid-1600's. in 2004, extensive verification performed by the Pathology Department at The University of South Florida, with the use of an electron microscope, confirmed that these emeralds exhibit coral growth and salt crystals remnants. Gold flakes were also discovered on their surface under high magnfication, which is unusual to find attached to emeralds that have been mined. However, this would be possible when the emeralds were lost for hundreds of years in a shipwreck carrying a cargo of treasure including gold coins.
